Economic Outlook As the fastest growing city in Canada, Calgary's economy has been built upon a large supply of oil and gas, but has moved into other industries. Besides the energy sector, it boasts a good business climate for technology, manufacturing, and tourism. Its unemployment rate is among the lowest in Canada at 4.6% in 2000 and has one of the country's youngest populations, an average of 34 years. |
Deregulation Alberta has recently deregulated its electricity market and already operates a deregulated natural gas market. The government is still working through the details and implementation of this decision. Deregulation means the consumer can choose their provider based on criteria such as price, product selection and service. Providers must compete for customer business based on this same criteria.
